“Step Into the Light” A wide photo-realistic image of a doorway opening into bright sunlight from a dim room, symbolizing walking in the light and cleansing grace in 1 John 1:5–7.

March 21, 2026

In 1 John 1:5–7, we’re told God is light and there is no darkness in Him. The passage says that walking in the light means honest living before God, and it leads to real fellowship and cleansing through Jesus.

Devotional: It’s easy to think “walking in the light” means living a perfect, polished life. Like if you mess up, you’ve stepped into darkness and God is disappointed. But John isn’t talking about performance here. He’s talking about honesty. Walking in the light means you stop hiding. You stop pretending. You stop editing your life to look better than it is.

Darkness loves secrecy. It loves isolation. It loves that quiet voice that says, “Don’t tell anybody, they won’t understand.” It loves the way shame keeps people silent. But God is light, and light doesn’t just expose, it heals. Light isn’t out to embarrass you. Light is out to set you free.

John says if we claim fellowship with God but keep walking in darkness, we’re not living in the truth. That’s hard to hear, but it’s also kind. Because it means God wants your real life, not your church face. God wants your whole story, not just the cleaned-up parts. And when you walk in the light, something surprising happens. You don’t just get closer to God, you get closer to each other. Light creates fellowship. Honesty makes room for real community.

Then John says something even better. Walking in the light comes with cleansing, not condemnation. The blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin. Not some. Not the respectable sins. All. That’s grace, and that’s why Lent matters. Lent invites us to step into the light before Easter comes, so we can stop dragging chains we were never meant to carry.

So here’s the question for today. What are you hiding? Not from God, because you can’t hide from God. But what are you hiding from yourself, from others, from the truth? What’s the thing you keep pushing down because facing it feels scary?

Stepping into the light doesn’t mean you fix yourself first. It means you bring the real you to Jesus and let Him heal what you can’t. It means you stop negotiating with darkness and start trusting the light.

Action: Ask God to show you one area where you’ve been hiding, minimizing, or pretending. Then take one small step toward the light, tell the truth in prayer, write it down, or share it with a trusted person.

Prayer: Jesus, You are the Light, and I confess I’ve kept parts of my life in shadow. I’ve hidden behind excuses, pride, and fear. Today I’m stepping into Your light. Not because I’m strong, but because You are good. Cleanse me, heal me, and free me from what keeps me stuck. Give me courage to tell the truth and humility to receive Your grace. Thank You that Your light doesn’t shame me, it restores me. Draw me into real fellowship with You and with others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Thought for the Day: The light of Jesus doesn’t crush you, it frees you.

1 John 1:5–7 reminds us that walking in the light isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being honest. God’s light doesn’t shame us, it heals us. If you’ve been hiding, minimizing, or carrying quiet guilt, let today be a step into the light and into freedom.
