John 17:20–23: Widening the Circle

Jesus prays that all believers may be one, so that the world may believe God sent Him.

Devotional: On the night before His death, Jesus prayed for His disciples—and for all who would believe through their message. His prayer wasn’t for uniformity but unity. “That they may be one as we are one…so that the world may believe.”

Unity is not optional. It is missional. The credibility of our witness depends on it. When the church draws lines of exclusion, our testimony weakens. When we embody oneness in Christ, the world sees God’s love in action.

This prayer connects directly to Mark 9. The disciples wanted to draw lines; Jesus wanted to draw them together. He reminds us that the mission is bigger than our tribe, our preferences, our control. The goal isn’t to protect turf but to reflect the love of the Triune God.

Revelation 7:9 gives a glimpse of the future: a multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne. That is the circle Jesus prays us into. Outreach isn’t about enlarging our brand but joining God’s vision of global, joyful worship.

In a fractured world, the church is called to model unity—not ignoring truth, but embodying it with love. The question isn’t “Are they one of us?” but “Are we one in Christ?”

Action: Pray for the unity of Christ’s church. Ask God to heal divisions and help you be an agent of peace.

Prayer: Father, make us one as You and the Son are one. Let our unity bear witness to Your love and draw the world to Jesus. Amen.

Thought for the Day: Unity in Christ is our greatest witness.
