Paul explains that Christ died for us while we were still sinners and unable to rescue ourselves. God’s love takes the initiative.

We sometimes tell our faith stories as though everything began with a decision we made. We started attending church. We asked for help. We finally admitted that something needed to change. Those responses matter, but Paul reminds us that God’s love was already present before any of them.
Christ didn’t wait for us to become easier to love. He gave Himself for us while we were still sinners.
In our Wesleyan tradition, we call God’s work before our response prevenient grace. It may become visible through a patient friend, a stirring of conscience, an unexpected desire to pray, or a kindness that makes us wonder whether we’ve misunderstood God. None of those experiences saves us by itself, but God can use them to awaken us to His invitation. We respond because grace has made response possible. Even the beginning of faith gives us reason for gratitude rather than pride.
That changes how we look at people who aren’t following Christ. They aren’t outside God’s concern while He waits for them to become respectable. He loves them now. We cannot know all the ways He may already be reaching toward them, and we don’t need to force a response He invites freely.
Perhaps someone you love seems far from faith. Keep praying. Keep listening. Let your words and actions reflect the kindness of Christ. You aren’t carrying God’s love into a place He has never noticed. You’re being invited to participate in the love He already has for that person.
Action
Pray for someone who seems distant from God. Choose one simple way to show that person care without turning the gesture into pressure or a test of their response.
Prayer
Loving Father, thank You for reaching toward me before I understood how much I needed You. Help me remember the patience and kindness through which You’ve drawn me closer. I place before You those I love who seem far from faith. Work in their lives, open their hearts to Christ, and help me love them without trying to control them. Keep my witness gentle, honest, and faithful. Teach me to trust the reach of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Your response to God is real, but His love reached you first.
God didn’t wait for us to get our lives together before loving us. “Loved Before We Turned,” based on Romans 5:6–8, reminds us that grace takes the first step and invites us to trust God’s love for people who haven’t yet turned toward Him.
