A Rehearsal for Heaven

November 4, 2025

1 Corinthians 11:23–26 recounts how Jesus gave His body and blood for us and commands, “Do this in remembrance of Me,” proclaiming the Lord’s death until He comes.

Devotional:

Every time we gather at the Lord’s Table, we take part in a rehearsal for heaven—a sacred act that connects memory and promise. Paul’s words to the Corinthians remind us that this isn’t just a ritual we repeat; it’s a story we live. When we break the bread, we remember Christ’s body given for us. When we lift the cup, we proclaim His death, not as an ending, but as the beginning of something eternal.

Jesus didn’t say, “Remember Me when life feels easy.” He said, “Do this in remembrance of Me”—in every season, through joy and sorrow alike. Communion draws us back to the heart of the gospel: His body broken so ours could be made whole, His blood poured out so grace could reach every corner of creation.

But the Table also points us forward. Paul writes that we “proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes,” which means every Communion is a glimpse of the feast to come. It’s a rehearsal for heaven—the gathering of saints and believers from every generation, seated together at one table in the eternal joy of Christ’s presence.

When you receive the bread and cup, remember that you’re not alone. You’re part of a vast communion stretching through time and eternity. The saints who once knelt at this meal in candlelit rooms now feast in fullness, and as we eat, our hearts whisper, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

Action: When you take Communion, pause and picture who you’ll be joining in the heavenly feast. Let that image fill you with gratitude and hope.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for this sacred meal that joins heaven and earth. Help me remember Your love poured out and live in hope for the day You return. May I always approach Your Table with gratitude, faith, and longing for the Communion That Never Ends. In Your holy name, Amen.

Thought for the Day: Every Communion is a rehearsal for heaven.
