You Belong, a wide 16:9 photo-realistic image of a quiet sunlit porch with an empty rocking chair, blooming flowers, and warm morning light, symbolizing belonging, comfort, and the Spirit’s assurance. The image includes the title You Belong and a paraphrase of Romans 8:14–16.

Romans 8:14–16 reminds believers that those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. We have not received a spirit that drives us back into fear, but the Spirit who assures us that we belong to God. The Holy Spirit bears witness within us that we are God’s children.

Devotional: Mother’s Day can bring a strange mix of feelings. For some, it is a day filled with gratitude, flowers, phone calls, and memories that still feel warm. For others, it is a day that touches tender places. Some grieve a mother who is gone. Some grieve a child. Some carry wounds from a relationship that should have felt safe but did not. Some sit with an ache they rarely explain out loud.

Romans 8 speaks gently into all of that. Paul reminds us that those who belong to Christ have not received a spirit that sends them back into fear. That matters because fear can make us question everything. Fear tells us we are alone. Fear tells us we have to prove our worth. Fear tells us love can disappear if we fail, disappoint, or need too much.

But the Spirit tells us something different. The Spirit bears witness that we are children of God. That means our deepest identity is not built on who stayed, who left, who approved, who misunderstood, or who failed us. Our deepest identity is rooted in the love of God made known through Jesus Christ.

There is a kind of healing that comes when we stop trying to earn belonging and begin receiving it as grace. God does not adopt us reluctantly. He does not keep us at arm’s length until we become easier to manage. He draws us close, names us as His own, and gives us the Spirit to remind us when life makes us forget.

That does not mean every earthly relationship becomes simple. It does not erase grief or repair every memory overnight. But it does give us a place to stand. When the day feels sweet, we can give thanks. When it feels complicated, we can breathe. When it feels lonely, we can remember that the Spirit is still bearing witness within us, whispering the truth we need most.

You belong to God. You are not unwanted. You are not forgotten. You are not left to carry life by yourself. In Christ, you are held by a love that does not loosen its grip.

Action: Take a few quiet minutes today and repeat this prayerful sentence: “I belong to God.” Notice what feelings rise up, whether comfort, resistance, grief, or gratitude, and offer them honestly to the Lord.

Prayer: Loving Father, thank You for calling me Your child. On days when I feel secure, help me receive Your love with gratitude. On days when I feel lonely, wounded, or unsure, let Your Spirit remind me that I still belong to You. Heal the places where fear has shaped my heart, and teach me to rest in the grace You have already given through Jesus Christ. Help me live today as someone loved, claimed, and held by You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day: The Spirit reminds me that I belong to God.

Romans 8:14–16 reminds us that we have not received a spirit that drives us back into fear. Through Christ, we are children of God, and the Holy Spirit bears witness that we belong to Him.

Mother’s Day can bring joy, grief, gratitude, and ache into the same room. Whatever this day holds, God’s love remains steady. You are not forgotten. You are not unwanted. You belong to God.
