Romans 5:6–8 reminds us that Christ did not die for us after we became strong, righteous, or worthy. He gave Himself for us while we were still powerless and sinful. God’s love is shown most clearly in this: Christ came for us before we could ever make ourselves deserving.
Devotional: Most of us know how to tidy ourselves up before company comes. We clear the counters, hide the clutter, light a candle, and hope nobody opens the wrong closet. We know how to make things look better than they are. Sometimes we try to do the same thing with God. We want to straighten up our souls before we come too close.
Romans 5 will not let us pretend that grace works that way. Paul says Christ died for us while we were still powerless. Not after we became strong. Not after we had everything figured out. Not after we could prove our faithfulness. While we were still sinners, Christ gave Himself for us.
That kind of love can be hard to receive because it leaves no room for boasting. We do not get to say, “God loved me because I was easy to love.” We do not get to say, “Jesus came near because I had earned the invitation.” The gospel tells a better truth. God loved us first. Christ came near first. Grace moved toward us while we were still in need.
This does not make sin small. It makes grace large. Paul does not pretend that human brokenness is harmless. He names it plainly. We were powerless. We were sinners. We needed saving. But God’s answer was not distance. God’s answer was Jesus.
That is why we can come to God honestly. We do not have to hide the cluttered rooms of the heart. We do not have to pretend we are stronger than we are. We can bring our need, our repentance, our weakness, and our hope to the One who has already shown His love for us in Christ.
Grace does not wait until we are ready. Grace makes us able to respond.
Action: Spend a few minutes today naming one place where you have been trying to make yourself “ready enough” for God. Offer it honestly to Him and thank Him for loving you first.
Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for loving me before I knew how to love You back. Thank You for sending Christ while I was still weak and in need of mercy. Forgive me for the times I try to earn what You have already given in grace. Help me stop hiding from You. Teach me to come honestly, repent sincerely, and trust the love You have shown through Jesus. Shape my life so that the mercy I have received becomes mercy I offer to others. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Christ did not wait for us to become worthy before He loved us.
Romans 5:6–8 gives us one of the clearest pictures of grace in Scripture. Christ did not come for us after we had everything together. He did not wait until we were strong, righteous, polished, or easy to love. While we were still powerless and sinful, He gave Himself for us.
That truth frees us from pretending. We can stop trying to clean up every corner of our hearts before we come to God. Grace does not ignore sin, but it does reach us before we can fix ourselves. God’s love comes first, and that love changes everything.
Today, remember this simple truth: Christ loved you before you were ready. You can come to Him honestly.
