Matthew 1-4

These chapters set the foundation for the Gospel of Matthew, introducing the genealogy and birth of Jesus, his early life, and the beginning of his public ministry. The narrative highlights Jesus' unique identity as the Son of God, his fulfillment of prophecies, and his mission to proclaim the arrival of the kingdom of heaven and bring salvation to humanity.

Matthew 1-4

Chapter 1: This chapter provides a genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing his lineage from Abraham to King David and finally to Joseph, Jesus' legal father. It highlights Jesus' connection to the line of David, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. The chapter also narrates the angelic announcement of Jesus' conception to Joseph and Mary, emphasizing that Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises.

Chapter 2: Chapter 2 focuses on the events surrounding Jesus' birth. It describes the visit of the Magi (wise men) who came from the East following a star to find and worship the newborn King of the Jews. King Herod learns of this and fears a potential rival, leading him to order the massacre of all male infants in Bethlehem. Joseph is warned in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus to escape Herod's cruelty. After Herod's death, the family returns to Israel, settling in Nazareth.

Chapter 3: John the Baptist is introduced as the one fulfilling the prophecy of preparing the way for the Messiah. He preaches a message of repentance and baptizes people in the Jordan River. Jesus comes to John to be baptized, though John hesitates due to recognizing Jesus' divinity. However, Jesus insists, and as he is baptized, the Holy Spirit descends on him in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven declares him to be the beloved Son of God.

Chapter 4: Chapter 4 details Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. After his baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert, where he fasts for forty days and nights. Satan tempts him three times, trying to exploit his physical hunger, his desire for power, and his trust in God's protection. Jesus resists each temptation by quoting Scripture. He then begins his public ministry in Galilee, preaching about the kingdom of heaven, healing the sick, and calling his disciples, including Simon Peter and Andrew.
